A historic 1968 photo taken by members of the Apollo 8 mission orbiting the Moon shows Earth as a white and blue ball suspended in the blackness of space. This photo symbolically highlights the beauty of our planet and its uniqueness, which has fostered the emergence of life on Earth. Unlike its rust-colored neighbors — Venus, due to its surface temperature, and Mars, due to the dominance of iron oxides in its soil — it's water that gives our planet its color. This coloration is not because it reflects the blue sky, but because of water's interesting properties. Light waves corresponding to the colors red, orange, and yellow (long wavelength) are absorbed more strongly by water than those corresponding to blue (short wavelength). Thus, when sunlight reaches water, it predominantly reflects blue light, absorbing the other colors.
